In a blog post on the Huffington Post about mentorship and motivation, Shadi Bushra mentioned the Phoenix Scholars.

For those mature enough to recognize how much they have to gain from a mentor, there is an amazing program founded by a friend and fellow Stanford student, Michael Tubbs. The Phoenix Scholars program was created when Tubbs, realized that he wouldn’t have been able to get into Stanford without the guidance provided by a mentor. He recognized that this help in preparing college essays, finding scholarships, and providing self-confidence was often something students in low socioeconomic areas did not have access to, no matter how successful they were academically. Now, with the help of a team of undergraduate staff and mentors, Phoenix Scholars is sending low-income and first-generation students to college every year.

The Phoenix Scholars were recently featured in the news! On Recordnet, two of our alumni from Stockton share their experience with the program. The two stories in the article are a testament to the success of the Phoenix Scholars.

Lissette Rodriguez is a Stagg High alumna and currently a freshman at Northwestern University with the help of The Phoenix Scholars. As a senior in high school, Rodriguez excelled in her classes and fostered a passion for journalism, yet her relatives suggested she attend a trade school rather than subject herself to rigorous academics. Through the program, she was given direction and advice unavailable from family who had no experience of their own in pursuing college admission.

Denzel Butler is a Benjamin Holt College Preparatory Academy alum and attends the University of California, Merced. As the first in his family to attend college, Butler made academics his path to a four-year degree. With the Phoenix Scholars, Butler was able to get on track and have a mentor 24-7 to answer questions and critique his essay.

As they continue into their first year of college, the Phoenix Scholars continues to provide them with support, including video guides on maintaining a schedule, meeting with professors, and adjusting study habits. The alumni also receive newsletters and gain advice through conference calls. Wish them luck in the first year of college!
